Dictionary:
Age
- the age distribution of the population helps determine the relative youth or
maturity of a market area. Age classification is based on the age of the
person as of April 1, 2000.
Aggregate Income - is defined as the total money income, expressed
in millions of dollars, for all persons in an area regardless of household
status.
American Indian - a person having origins in any of the original
peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who
maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment. Includes persons who
classified themselves as one of the following: American Indian, Eskimo or Aleut.
Asian - a person having origins in any of the original peoples of
the Far East, Southeast Asia or the Indian subcontinent.
Average Family Size - is calculated by dividing the number of
persons in families by the number of families.
Average Income - is calculated by dividing total household or
family income by the total number of households or families respectively.
Average Household Size - is the number of persons in households
divided by the number of households.
Black - a person having origins in any of the black racial groups
of Africa. Includes persons who indicated their race as Afro-American,
Black Puerto Rican, Jamaican, West Indian, Nigerian or Haitian.
Contract
Rent - is the monthly amount, regardless of utilities, furnishings or
fees, meals or services that may be included. It is the monthly rent
asked.
Education - is a good indicator of the relative socio-economic
status of an area. Data is tabulated for person 25 years and older.
Persons are classified according to the highest level of school completed or the
highest degree received.
Employed - all persons 16 years old and older who were either
"at work" during the reference week as paid employees or were
"with a job but not at work" - those who did not work during the
reference week but had jobs or businesses from which they were temporarily
absent.
Family - a family consists of a householder and one or more other
persons living in the same household who are related to the householder by
birth, marriage or adoption.
Group Quarters - all persons not living in households are
classified by the Census Bureau as living in group quarters. Group
quarters is divided into institutional and non-institutional.
Institutional would include those in correctional institutions, nursing homes,
mental hospitals, hospitals for chronically ill, juvenile institutions and
detention centers. Examples of non-institutional would be rooming houses,
group homes, dormitories, crews of maritime vessels and living quarters for
victims of natural disasters.
Hispanic Origin - includes persons who classified themselves in
one of the specific Hispanic Origin categories listed on the census
questionnaire - "Mexican", "Puerto Rican" or
"Cuban" - as well as those who indicated they were of other
Spanish/Hispanic origin such as Spain, the Spanish speaking countries of Central
or South America or the Dominican Republic. Hispanic origin refers to
origin not race. Persons of Hispanic origin can be of any race.
Household - includes all persons who occupy a housing unit,
whether related or not. Not all households contain families, since a
household may comprise a group of unrelated persons or one person living alone.
Household Income - includes the income of the householder and all
other persons over 15 years of age, whether they are related to the householder
or not.
Household Type - is classified by the presence of relatives and
the number of persons living in a housing unit. Family households include
married couples and other families - female householder with no spouse present,
male householder with no spouse present, etc...
Householder - in most cases, this is the person, or one of the
persons, in whose name the home is owned, being bought or rented. If there
is no such person in the household, any adult household member 15 years of age
or older, could be designated as the householder. Householder may also be
referred to as "Head of Household".
Housing Unit - can be vacant or occupied, seasonal or year round.
Includes houses, mobile homes or trailers, apartments, a group of rooms or a
single room occupied as a separate living quarter or if vacant, intended for
occupancy as separate living quarters.
Housing Value - is the owner's estimate of the value of the
property if it were for sale.
Income - is the total money income for the calendar year from all
persons 15 years and older. Money income is the sum of wages and salary
income, self employment income, interest and dividends, retirement or disability
income, social security income, public assistance and other types of income
including child support, alimony and unemployment compensation.
Labor Force - includes all employed and unemployed civilians plus
members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty.
Median Age - this measure divides the age distribution into two equal
parts: one half of the population falling above the median value and one half
below.
Median Income - represents the middle of the income distribution,
with half of the incomes above the median and half of the incomes below the
median.
Non-Family Household - is a housing unit occupied by a group of
unrelated persons or a single person living alone. The group of unrelated
persons can be 2 to 9 persons. Non-family households with 10 or more
persons are considered group quarters.
Non-Family Householder - a householder living alone or with
non-relatives.
Not in Labor Force - persons 16 and older who are not part of the
labor force. Would include students, homemakers, retired workers, seasonal
workers enumerated in an "off" season who were not looking for work,
institutionalized persons and persons doing incidental unpaid family work.
Owner-Occupied - a housing unit is owner-occupied if the owner or
co-owner lives in the unit, even if it is mortgaged or not fully paid for.
Per Capita Income - is defined as the average money income per
man, woman and child regardless of age, labor force status, or group quarters
status.
Population - the number of residents in an area.
Race - the concept of race as defined by the Census Bureau does not
denote any clear- cut scientific definition. The race data represents
self-classification by people according to the race with which they most closely
identify.
Renter-Occupied - all occupied housing units that are not
owner-occupied.
Unemployed - all civilians 16 years old and over are classified as
unemployed if they (1) were neither "at work" nor "with a job but
not at work" during the reference week, and (2) were looking for work
during the last 4 weeks and (3) were available to accept a job.
Vacant Housing Unit - a housing unit is vacant if no one is living
in it at the time of enumeration, unless its occupants are only temporarily
absent.
White - a person having origins in any of the original peoples of
Europe, the Middle East or North Africa. Includes persons who indicated
their race as "White" or reported entries such as Canadian, German,
Italian, Lebanese, Near Easterner, Arab or Polish.
